My new song and video “Walking Away” are about starting anew after being in a toxic relationship for far too long. In the video, my shedding of layers of clothes signifies jettisoning the baggage accumulated from years of abuse and emotional pain. With the symbolism of me throwing off these clothes and the hair covering, I want to empower all woman oppressed by a personal, cultural, or religious relationships to walk away and find freedom. I filmed this video in Kyiv under martial law while I was there filming a documentary about Ukrainian resistance and resilience. We had to do takes between air raid sirens and drone attacks. Some might say that the song has a broader meaning when seen from the context of Ukraine leaving an abusive relationship. The music was recorded in the studio with a live pianist and string quartet in order to portray the intimacy, realism, and importance of the music and lyrics. Please comment and share.
Kelsie Kimberlin – Walking Away (Official Video)
Walkin away from this life with you
I gotta start anew, far away from you
Walking into a life where I can be me
I’m gonna be so free, just worryin bout me
Walkin away and I’m travelin light
You won’t think I’m right, but I’ve seen the light
Walking into a different beginning
I feel like singing, that I’m beginning
I don’t know if we just grew apart
Or if we just weren’t right, from the very start
I don’t know if it was just your control
But I just can’t play, that stupid role
I know that it hurts to see me go
Don’t try to talk to me it’s no use
I just want to make sure that you know
That I just can’t take any more abuse
Walking away I leave it all behind
You’re gonna think I’m unkind, leaving you behind
Walkin out so I can be born again
You’re gonna say I’ve sinned, but I’ve been born again.
I don’t know if we just grew apart
Or if we just weren’t right, from the very start
I don’t know if it was just your control
But I just can’t play, that stupid role
Walkin away from this life with you
I gotta start anew, far away from you
