The song Sally is a favorite of mine because it’s catchy, unique, and has lyrics that many of my friends can relate to. I also like how the coda drops into a “Pretty Woman” kind of vibe with some very cool guitar work. The lyrics describe a girl who lost her father which made her hate herself and act out in negative ways. But then she found her footing and purpose in life along with a supportive boyfriend. After that, she is so hot that anyone who gets close feels her burning fire. As with my last song, Walking Away, I also directed this video in Kyiv between shots of my full-length movie.
Some people have asked whether the line “Sally lost her father” is about the tragedy so many young Ukrainian girls have faced in the war and how such a searing event can throw them into a tailspin. It could be interpreted that way but it’s also about how girls are strong and resilient and can bounce back with a new focus and dedication. My friend, the great filmmaker, Pavlo Khomiuk, shot all the video and produced the video. And isn’t it nice to have a cool, modern pop song played by a real band with real instruments and an awesome banjo!!
