The concept for this video began in 2017 when I finished a demo version of the song and sent it to the great Ukrainian composer and film director Sergiy Krutsenko in Kyiv. He wrote an orchestral score and brought in the Kyiv Radio Symphony Orchestra to play it. He then invited me to Ukraine to film the video in an epic production at a former Soviet prison camp and a centurys’ old castle. The filming was both grueling and exhilarating. The story is about a dystopian society where music is banned and musicians are executed for violating the “law of silence.”

I play the role of the protagonist musician who, like a guerrilla leader, opposes the dictator while his zombified army constantly tries to stop me but I always get away at the last second. This story is not only a metaphor for the actions of authoritarian regimes around the world, such as Russia, but it foretold, in a sense, the 2022 full invasion of Ukraine and the fleeing of the targeted Russian opposition. And the lyrics of the song are the perfect power anthem for Ukraine and other global freedom movements with the chorus a defiant and unapologetic war cry toward victory–“We are the promise, we are the glory, we are the story.”

Initially, we created the video not just for the song but as a pilot for a series on cable. Unfortunately, COVID hit in 2020 before we could finish it, then the big war started in February 2022, and then my friend and mentor, Sergiy Krutsenko, died suddenly on January 6, 2023 while he was at his workstation editing the video.

We will now actively push for a cable company to fulfill Sergey’s dream to create a hard hitting film series where famous musicians can make cameo appearances with me to fight against fascism. On the anniversary of Sergiy’s death, I dedicate this video to him and to the people of Ukraine. Sometimes just an abbreviation of a name can evoke such disgust and hatred that no more is needed for humanity to understand who that person is. Everyone knows by the title of this song that it can only be one person on the entire planet. In the song, I never use his name, but rather, I only describe the awful, inhumane things he has done, not just to Ukraine but to countries and people across the globe.

Following the extraordinary success of my recent trilogy about the war in Ukraine, I decided to release this song as a lyric video using footage that ended up on the cutting room floor when editing the prior three videos. All of the footage of me was taken during my recent trip to Ukraine. The lyrics are hard hitting and that is the point. And the significance of the release date is that ten years ago, millions of Ukrainians participated in the Revolution of Dignity to rid the country of a corrupt puppet beholden to the person named in the four-letter title of this song. “There are some people throughout history who committed such evil that the mere mention of their name sends a chill down one’s spine,” said Kelsie. “Hitler, Pol Pot, Idi Amin, bin Laden, and Stalin are just a few over the past 80 years. In modern history, the name Vlad has been added to that list because of the horrors that he has perpetrated across the globe, especially his illegal and unjust war against Ukraine which has resulted in hundreds of thousands of deaths, millions of displaced Ukrainians, and the systematic rape and torture of innocent civilians. So I decided to chronicle the misdeeds of Vlad in my new song by that name. Yet, I never used his name in the song because his actions are so well documented that everyone who hears the song will know it can only describe one person on this earth. My goal is to get people to both think about whether the global community can allow such evil to persist and to keep the focus on the daily atrocities that are taking place in Ukraine,” Kelsie added.

Although the footage used in the lyric video was shot for Kelsie’s trilogy, it is effectively edited with quick cuts to match the intensity and power of the music in “Vlad” which uses real instruments in a driving beat and a rap lyric. The chorus refrain, after a long list of misdeeds, repeats that the perpetrator is a “bad man.” The video editing was done by the brilliant Kyiv filmmaker Pavlo Khomiuk.

My new video “Turn Back” is the third of the trilogy of videos I filmed in Ukraine in August, 2023. It has multiple meanings depending on the place in which you find yourself. For many people, it is a plea to a loved one who looking for something somewhere else to find it right there at home. But for me, this song and video are about Ukraine. First, it is a call for those millions of refugees who left Ukraine after the war began to come back home to help Ukraine rebuild.

Ukraine needs you and this is where your heart remains. Second, it expresses the longing of all those Ukrainians who have a friend or family member fighting near or far to come back home alive. In the video, you can see photos of thousands of soldiers who died defending Ukraine. Those photos are posted on The Wall of Remembrance next to St. Michael’s Cathedral in Kyiv, the bells of which were heard all over Kyiv in December 2013 at the beginning of the “Revolution of Dignity” of Euromaidan. Ten years ago, there were only 100 photos on that wall of the “Heavenly Hundred” who were killed by terrorists at Maidan in Kyiv.

Now there are more than ten thousands photos with more added every day. The destroyed enemy tanks and heavy military equipment shown in the video are set up in the square next to the cathedral to remind people of the terror unleashed against innocent Ukrainians. These three videos form a trilogy of modern Ukrainian history, showing the dignity, strength and desire that ordinary Ukrainians stand for despite horrific difficulties. They went through “Armageddon” to get “Another Chance to Live Again” and finally “Turn Back” to a normal life where there is love, happiness and independence.

Through these songs and videos, I am acting as a chronicler, calling on people from all over the world not only to feel the severity of the war, but also to help the Ukrainians get back what belongs to them. My harmonies are in a polyphonic form where separate vocals alternately hand off or differentiate the melody with a mesmerizing, haunting and calming effect. I laid those tracks as you hear them without the use of autotune or a harmonizer.

My new song and video “Another Chance To Live Again” are about the profound feelings of loss that so many people in Ukraine have experienced since they were attacked by war criminals starting in 2014.

I wanted to express and encapsulate the feelings not only of individual people but of an entire country and society so I used religious and spiritual references in the music and lyrics, and we filmed in several places of religious significance.

I traveled to Ukraine to film the video in some of the locations of the worst atrocities in Irpin and Bucha. The video begins at a destroyed cultural center that was once the go-to place for plays, concerts and other happy community events. Out back was the Irpin soccer stadium where teams and children once played and practiced. It is now pockmarked with dozens of artillery holes and thousands of shrapnel wounds. Another building in the video was once filled with hundreds of apartments where people lived peacefully before it was attacked with missiles. The destroyed bridge was initially used by Ukrainians trying to escape the enemy bombings until the enemy massacred hundreds of civilians driving across it. The Ukrainian Armed Forces blew it up so the enemy could not advance with tanks and heavy equipment. The church scarred with shrapnel and broken religious icons is located right next to the bridge.

We filmed with the permission of the Armed Forces while air raid sirens were blaring and attack drones and missiles were being shot down overhead. It was all very emotional for me because I knew that families with their children died right where I was filming. I talked to many people who lost loved ones and told them that I was there to tell their stories to the world.

One small miracle happened when we were filming the last shot. While I was singing in front of a blown out window in the apartment complex, a rainbow appeared in the sky behind me and remained while we filmed a dozen takes. A good sign.

Ukrainian President Zelensky, speaking at the Grammys, urged artists everywhere to use their music to draw attention to Ukraine in order to bring victory and peace to the country. Kelsie Kimberlin, a popular American-Ukrainian singer, took the President’s words seriously by recently making the long and dangerous trip to Ukraine where she filmed three music videos, “Armageddon”, “Turn Back”, and “Another Chance”, each one to be released respectively in September, October, and November 2023.

Kelsie arrived in Kyiv to martial law, air raid sirens, and attacks by drones and missiles which were destroyed over her head by anti-missile batteries. Despite these terror attacks, she filmed “Armageddon” in Bucha, Irpin, and Kyiv at many of the places where the worst atrocities by the Russian army took place in February and March 2022. Because many of these locations were under military control, her team had to get permission to film there. Kelsie is the only foreign artist to be granted such permission. Following many days of arduous filming, she was given a commendation by a branch of the Armed Forces for using her music to protect Ukraine. She was given a gift from an aide to President Zelensky in gratitude for her work. The Ukrainian Armed Forces media conducted an in-depth interview with her, the first interview with a foreign artist for its flagship publication.

Kelsie worked with Grammy winner Liam Nolan who mixed the song, and with Grammy nominee Stuart Hawkes who mastered it. The song was orchestrated by famous Kyiv composer Yurii Shepeta.

“Although I was aware of the risks, I knew I had to visit Ukraine so I could see for myself the horrors inflicted on Ukraine. I knew that I could only film these videos at authentic locations in order to convey the gravity of the war and portray to the world the absolute importance of continued support for a complete victory for Ukraine to its rightful international borders. I knew that I had to hear the stories of those affected by the war in order to give voice to those stories. As I did, the hair on my body stood on end knowing that families with children died right there,” said Kelsie.

While in Ukraine, Kelsie met with war refugees, visited a military hospital and displaced animal shelter, talked with many soldiers on duty in various locations, and listened to story after story of victims of the war, including women and children who were raped and tortured after their loved ones were brutally killed in the Kyiv suburbs. She saw many destroyed churches, a bombed cultural center, hundreds of decimated homes and apartments, dozens of mangled parks and playgrounds, and streets pockmarked with tens of thousands of mortar hits and shrapnel scars.

The video “Armageddon” is a game-changer because it shows the devastation of the war with authentic, unvarnished footage. Kelsie’s heartfelt and emotional performance is awe-inspiring because of her ability to convey the anger, despair, and defiance of the Ukrainian people. In her lyrics, she repeats that Ukraine will protect the world from armageddon: “We are gonna stop it, stop it, stop it.”

“Every day, I see atrocities committed against Ukraine and finally I just had to go and show my support. I want to wrap my arms around the whole country in a giant protective hug and tell everyone it will be ok. Kelsie is a popular American-Ukrainian singer who, since the start of the great war, has taken many actions to show support for Ukraine. In more than a dozen music videos and YouTube shorts, she has implored people everywhere to become aware, get involved and donate. She has given countless interviews on radio and television doing the same. Her music video about Ukraine, “Spoof I Wonder” has been viewed more than 350,000 times and received massive radio play.

Her “I Am Ukrainian” video, a plea to the world, has been very well received. She and her family in America have sponsored and housed at least a dozen war refugees. And now she is taking the next step to visit Ukraine herself. She will film music videos of her songs, Armageddon, Catharsis, Turn Back, and possibly others.

Kelsie will be blogging while in Ukraine on her many social media pages and a film crew will be documenting her trip. She will visit some of the most tragic areas around Kyiv, including Bucha and Irpin where the enemy slaughtered and tortured innocent civilians in 2022. She asks everyone to follow her.

“Shattered” is a song that so many of us can relate to, either in our own lives or in the lives of loved ones. It is about an amazing girl who gave it all to a guy who treated her badly causing her so much stress and loss of self confidence that she let herself go and finally broke into pieces “all shattered across the floor.” But the song is also about her redemption, about how, from the depths of depression and despair she found the strength to put it all back together and decide, once and for all that she deserved better. The broader message here can apply to other aspects of human existence, whether in the affairs of countries or business. We are all put on earth to be the best, to look out for each other, and to show by example.

I chose to film this video in the music studio with a live pianist and string quartet in order to portray the intimacy, realism, and importance of the music and lyrics. Please like, comment and share.
